Nkrumah’s ideas still relevant - Prof. Delle
The newly elected National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmund Delle, has said the ideas of the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, are still very relevant for national development.
“In my opinion, Nkrumah’s ideas are even more relevant today than before because he was far ahead of his time. Let me give you one simple example: The unity of Ghana as a country. Is it not one of the things he talked about that Ghanaians should consider themselves as Ghanaians first before considering themselves as Dagombas, Asantes, Ewes etc,” he pointed out.
Relevance of Dr Nkrumah’s ideas
In an interview on the relevance of Dr Nkrumah’s ideas in contemporary national development, as the country celebrated Founders’ Day last Monday, Prof. Delle said within that period, tribalism was almost non-existent in the national political discourse.
“But these days, what do you find around? Tribal wars here and there and this is affecting the development of the country and particularly in poor areas such as the northern part, where tribal wars are common.
“So you see, they are even more relevant. The unity of the country is more important than anything else and without a united country, how can we move ahead?” he queried.
Prof. Delle enumerated a number of issues upheld by Dr Nkrumah such as the formation of parties devoid of regional, religious and tribal biases; his fight for women’s rights to be partners in development; his desire for national security, his advocacy for technology and industrialisation, among others, as the ideas which remained as relevant today as those days.
