PNC group wants Dr Mahama to be flag bearer

A GROUP of current and past party executives of the People’s National Convention (PNC) drawn from the 10 regions of the country have appealed to Dr Edward Nasigri Mahama, a former flag bearer of the party, to consider leading the party again to the 2016 elections.

The group was of the view that with Dr Mahama as the flag bearer of the PNC, the party could help reorganise itself and stem its sinking fortunes.

Alhaji Baba Mohammed, a former Upper East Regional Chairman of the party, led the delegation to Accra to present their petition to the former flag bearer, Dr Mahama, on Saturday.

According to Alhaji Mohammed, the request, titled PNC at crossroads - We need you Doctor,’ was a demand made by the rank and file of the party at the polling station, constituency and regional levels.

Delegation

Among the delegation were: Mr Bonniey Dennis Thomas Boye, the Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman; Ali Arimeyqwo, a founder member from the Ashanti Region; Alhaji Mohammed Alhassan, the Western Region Vice-chairman; and Musah Kankani Greater Accra Vice Chairman of the party

The others were: Ms Regina Adjei Serwaa, the PNC parliamentary candidate for Bantama in 2012; Wasilat Shuaib, Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser Mr Johnson Ayine, a member of the Upper East Communication team and Justice Dagben, the Chairman of the Nabdam Constituency; Mr Newton Amoh Adu and Abdul Karim, parliamentary candidates of PNC in the Western Region during 2012 elections.

Alhaji Imoro Issahaque, the Eastern Regional Chairman and Mr Iddrisu Salifu, Northern Regional Deputy Communications Director, also expressed their support for the petition, saying the Northern and Eastern Regional executives were solidly behind the move to bring back Dr Mahama.

He said the delegation was, therefore, executing the wish of the people by travelling from all corners of the country in the holy month of fasting to present the request so it should not be ignored.

Alhaji Mohammed said when Dr Mahama was the flag bearer, many people did not understand his leadership style of grooming the PNC into a formidable Nkrumaist front.

Dwindling fortunes

He said with the current dwindling fortunes of the party, which is on the brink of collapse, the party was in dire need of a visionary leader who would restore it to its past glory.

According to Alhaji Baba Mohammed, if 2008 was a difficult moment for the party, then the 2012 general election was a moment of decadence in the history of the party.

He stated that whenever the roll of political parties was called, the PNC was hardly mentioned since its seats in parliament had dwindled from four in 2004 to one in 2012.

According to Alhaji Mohammed, the greatest mistake delegates made in Sunyani when they did not elect Dr Mahama as the flag bearer and the result is what they are reaping now, which is that instead of the party progressing, it is retrogressing.
‘’We are, therefore, appealing to Dr Nasigri Mahama to once again be the “Moses of our time and lead us to the promised land in the 2016 general election.”

Receiving the petition, Dr Mahama said he was touched by the concern shown by the former and current executives of the party and added that the PNC should be salvaged and not allowed to collapse.

He, however, stressed that he would pray and consult his family before making a decision on whether he should lead the party to the 2016 elections as the PNC’s flag bearer or not.
