Suspension brews tension in CPP

There is seeming tension within the Convention People’s Party (CPP) following the suspension of two of its national officers for acts the party thinks are not in consonance with its deeds and dictates.

Following from this, the youth wing of the party yesterday stormed the party headquarters in Accra, demanding the reinstatement of the two, particularly Mr Ernesto Yeboah.

Last week, the Central Executive Committee of the CPP suspended the General Secretary, Nii Armah Akomfrah, and the National Youth Organiser, Mr Yeboah, after they publicly condemned President John Mahama for accepting a car gift from a Burkinabe contractor.

That was after a member of the committee had brought a formal petition before it to act on the matter with dispatch.

Car gift saga

Addressing the car gift saga during the IEA Evening Encounter, the CPP’s presidential candidate, Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, is believed to have made statements which contradicted what the two leaders had said.

Mr Greenstreet’s comments, according to many, were in support of President Mahama.

That, in the view of pundits, had led to friction between the leader of the party and the two executive members.

Show of solidarity

But at the CPP headquarters  yesterday Mr Yeboah was met by scores of party youth drumming and dancing as a show of solidarity for their ‘Commander-in-Chief’.

Clad in party colours and carrying placards, the youth said they would continue to press home their demand until ‘something good’ came out of it.

Responding to cheers from the youth, Mr Yeboah, who is also the leader of the group, said he reported to work because he had not received any official notice from the party.

“I’m at work today to go about my normal duties assigned me because I have not been suspended and have not even received any letter from the party,” he told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

No personal attacks

Reacting to issues regarding the fracas between him and the CPP flag bearer, Mr Yeboah stated that there was no misunderstanding between them.

According to him, the demonstration was not a personal attack but to send a strong message to the leaders of the party that they were embarrassing the members and ought to sit up.

“Our leaders seem to be embarrassing us every day and that is what we will always fight against. Our flag bearer’s position on the car gift saga, for instance, was inconsistent with that of the party,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, in a petition, the Kwame Nkrumah Revolutionary Guards, another youth wing within the CPP, has questioned the integrity of the Central Committee to dismiss the two elected national officers.
