Tension mounts at Somanya

Tension is mounting at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo municipality following the desecration of the tomb of a Paramount Chief of the area, Nene Ologo Dautey II, who passed away in 2009.

The desecration was discovered last Thursday night by a policeman on duty at the palace, a section of which serves as the Royal Mausoleum, where paramount chiefs are buried.

A source told the Daily Graphic that while on duty at the palace that night, one of the policemen decided to lean against one of the two windows at the mausoleum.

However, to his dismay, the window caved in and after a thorough check, he realised that one of the tombs had been desecrated.

The policeman reported the matter to his superiors, who, after inspection, informed the Criminal Investigations Department of the Eastern Regional Police Command.

Subsequently, a team of investigators was despatched to Somanya, who informed the immediate family of the late paramount chief.

The source said after the inspection, it was realised that the remains of the chief and regalia had been looted.

Meanwhile, no arrest has been made and investigations are going on.

Succession plan

Following the death of Nene Ologo in 2009, the Nuer Gate was challenged by the Akrobettoe and the Ologo gates that it was not the turn of the Nuer Family to accede the stool.

The case was filed with the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, chaired by its President, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who is also the Okyenhene.

The committee struck out the case following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) adopted by the three gates which, among other issues, outlined the succession plan to the Yilo Krobo Paramountcy in the order of the Nuer, Akrobettoe and Ologo clans.

New chief

About three weeks ago, a 37-year-old logistics manager of the Ministry of Health in Accra, Mr Romeo Tetteh Kofi, was installed as the new Paramount Chief, with the stool name Nene Nuer Anobaah Sasraku II.

His coronation has been slated for April 30, 2015.

However, a section of the people in the traditional area are protesting against the installation of Mr Tetteh Kofi as the paramount chief.

Some of the residents of Sra, a suburb of Somanya, have demonstrated against the installation, accusing the police and the Municipal Security Committee of taking sides.
