The UFP is one of the smaller opposition parties to have fielded candidates in all the by-elections conducted in the country by the Electoral Commission (EC), sometime placing third behind the two main political parties — the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The General Secretary of the  UFP, Prince M. Zakaria, told the Daily Graphic that the congress would also be used to acclaim the Founder and National Chairman, Nana Dr Agyenim Boateng (Gyataba), as the flag bearer of the party.

He said over 2,500 delegates from the length and breadth of the country were expected to make it to the congress, the first highest decision-making body of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, and delegates could not afford to miss such "a hearty occasion."

Preparation ahead of the Congress

He said invitations had been sent to all the appropriate quarters, including the Electoral Commission (EC) and sister political parties.

Party flags, including "the UFP ubiquity in the Ashanti Regional capital is congress supportive," he added.

Popular acclamation of national officers

Mr Zakaria said apart from the flag bearer, the congress would seek popular acclamation for all national officers.

Officers to be acclaimed are national chairman, first national vice chairman, second national vice chairman, third  national vice chairman, general secretary, deputy general secretary, national treasurer, national organiser, youth organiser and women's organiser.

He said Ghanaians were tired of the ‘duopoly’ of the ruling NDC and the largest opposition party, the NPP, adding that the delegates would elect the right persons to enable the UFP to win the December, 2016 election.

He said looking at the state of affairs in the country, the clarion call had come for the Ghanaian electorate to replace the NDC with the UFP.
