It’s not over yet —Queens' coach

Ghana's senior female football team, Black Queens, believe qualification to this year’s African Women’s Championship (AWC) is not a done deal yet despite their massive win over Burkina Faso last Sunday.

The Queens returned home yesterday from Burkina Faso after registering a 3-0 victory over the Burkinabe in the first leg of their AWC qualifier, but head coach Yussif Basigi insists it was only a match won with a return leg still to be played.

The Queens stormed Ouagadougou determined to win and had the desired result following a brace from Faiza Ibrahim and a third goal from Agnes Aduako to cushion them ahead of the second leg in Accra in two weeks.

Ibrahim put the Queens ahead as early as the third minute of the game and 13 minutes later, Aduako made it 2-0. Ibrahim nailed the coffin long before the match ended, scoring her second and Ghana’s third in 24th minute.

Despite this huge step towards the next round, Coach Basigi insists the match is far from over and that the team will prepare   adequately for the second leg.

“We are happy about the result. It was our aim and we worked hard for it. That does not mean that it’s all wrapped up for us. There is still a second leg to be played and we will prepare well for it,” Coach Basigi told the Daily Graphic on the team’s arrival in Accra yesterday.

“We still have work in progress and some rough edges were identified last Sunday. These will be smoothened in preparation for the second leg. The scoreline looks flattery but the Burkinabes could be threatening if they get a sharp attack.

“We won’t be underrating them at all when we host them. We will prepare well for them,” the head coach stressed.
