Kotoko host Mamelodi Sundowns Sunday

Kotoko host Mamelodi SundownsExactly a week after league champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko were dealt a severe blow by Medeama SC in the FA Cup final, the Porcupine Warriors have an opportunity to present their fans with an opportunity to smile when they play visiting Mamelodi Sundowns at the Baba Yara Stadium Sunday.

The South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side, who are on a pre-season tour of the country, held Accra Hearts of Oak to a 1-1 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium last Wednesday and Sunday it would be Kotoko’s turn to host Sundowns who have been linked with a move for Kotoko defender Kwabena Adusei.

Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane, says he is more focused on his team’s preparation than the results of  the friendly matches lined up. But on account of their performance against Hearts last Wednesday, the South Africans can be expected to give the Oseikrom lads a good run for their money tomorrow.

The Ghanaian champions and Sundowns, who finished ninth in the PSL, are on different paths coming into Sunday’s friendly match.

Nicknamed ‘The Brazilians’, Sundowns are preparing for the upcoming South African season which commences on August 3, whereas Kotoko just concluded the Ghanaian football season with the MTN FA Cup final.

Even though the match is a friendly, both sides will be fired up to give of their best and maintain some pride. But the Porcupine Warriors must keep a close eye on Sundowns danger man, Surprise Moriri and talented players such as Anthony Laffour and Bengani Zungu who were a constant threat to Hearts in Accra.

Sundowns, who are featuring new signings, including Zambian goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene and Ghana defender, Rashid Sumaila, will play their final training match against Ebusua Dwarfs at the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast on Wednesday, July 24.
