Starlets’ bonus slashed from $3,000 to $1,000

The Minister of Youth and Sport, Isaac Asiamah, has revealed that the Black Starlets will receive $1,000 as winning bonus per match during the Africa U-17 Championship in Gabon.

The team’s new package was arrived at after dialogue between the ministry, the Starlets management officials and the playing body. It represents a reduction from an initial $3,000-a-match the players receive at international competitions.

A former national welterweight champion Isaac Aryee needs GH₵14,000 to undergo surgery on a broken neck, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has disclosed.

Aryee was allegedly knocked down while riding a motorbike by a vehicle driven by one officer Aikins of the Mamprobi Police post last Wednesday afternoon on the Mortuary Road in Accra.

Freshman Martha Bissah's gold medal in the 800 meters and a silver-medal performance by sophomore Taejah Robertson in the 100-meter hurdles highlighted the final day of action for the Norfolk State women's track and field team at the MEAC Outdoor Championship on Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The N.C. A&T women won the outdoor championship with 155 points, 31 ahead of runner-up Hampton. The NSU women finished tied with Bethune-Cookman for seventh place. Both tallied 54 points.

NBA star holds clinic for youngsters at Legon

Ghanaian-born professional basketball star Ben Bentil last Saturday took 94 young players through some important drills in the game at a clinic at the University of Ghana basketball court at Legon after which outstanding players were selected to form an all-star team to be groomed further.

Bentil, who played for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the US, with assistance from other coaches like Ben Cechini, screened hundreds of young players aged between 14 and 21 from academies and clubs in the Greater Accra Region who stormed Legon for the clinic which lasted over five hours.

Ghana picks seven disciplines at Commonwealth Youth Games

Ghana will compete in seven disciplines to represent the country at this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games to be held between July 19 and 23 in the Bahamas.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has selected athletics, swimming, judo, tennis, beach volleyball, boxing and cycling with 14 athletes -- two from each federation -- representing the country in their respective sports.

Kwesi Nyantakyi appointed CAF Vice President 

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi has been appointed the 1st Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Mr Nyantakyi's nomination for the post was validated by the CAF Executive Committee on Monday morning during its first meeting under the reign of recently elected CAF President Ahmad Ahmad in Manama, Bahrain.

Olympics stun Kotoko 2-0 on Otumfuo's birthday

Kumasi Asante Kotoko were unable to delight their owner and life patron, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on his birthday after they succumbed to a 2-0 loss at Accra Great Olympics on Saturday afternoon.

The Porcupine Warriors had played six consecutive league matches without victory but were confident of ending that barren run on the Otumfuo's birthday today (May 6) against fellow strugglers, Oly at the Accra Sports Stadium.

They were also looking to appease their fans after a humiliating 3-1 loss to bitter-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak in the President's Cup first-leg held at the same venue on Monday.
