Ray Opoku donates equipment to support juvenile boxing

 Ray Opoku, a former Ghanaian amateur and professional boxer in the 1970s and early 80s, has fulfilled a promise to provide headgear to support juvenile boxing in Ghana after watching a Facebook post of juveniles fighting without it back in July this year.

A number of kid boxers engaged in exhibition fights at this year’s ‘Salafest’ boxing show, which took place at Opera Square in Accra on July 9, videos of which were posted on Facebook.

Everest Cricket Club champions again

Everest Cricket Club are champions again - retaining the Greater Accra Cricket Invitational Tournament title when they defeated rivals BGC Cricket Club in the final by nine wickets at the Achimota Cricket Oval.

BGC scored 86 runs, all out in 19.1 overs after batting first upon winning the toss. Everest then stroked 87 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket in 15.3 overs. BGC made a poor start quickly losing three batsmen in the first 5 overs with Everest fast bowler David Nii Ashong Ankrah tearing through the BGC batting line-up.

Coach Ofori Asare— in Sierra Leone

Coach Asare in Sierra Leone to instruct boxing course

Veteran Ghanaian boxing trainer, Ofori Asare, arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone, last Thursday to conduct the AIBA (world amateur boxing governing body) boxing coaching course for One-Star certification.

The former Ghana amateur boxing team coach is on a one-week instructing course, supervising the tuition of a number of aspiring boxing coaches from December 16 to 23, with the participants expected to earn certificates that qualify them to coach at international level and be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

I want to lead Wa All Stars to CAF money zone­­ – Coach Adipah

The 2015/2016 Premier League award winner, Coach Enos Kwame Adipah, says his target for next season is to lead Wa All Stars to reach the money zone of the CAF Champions League competition at which they will represent Ghana next year.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports last Friday after he was decorated with the esteemed Coach of the Season award, Coach Adipa said “our target in Africa is at least to get to the final four.”

As part of improving on our football next season, I have through this column tried to appeal to our clubs to “take their hands off” our referees if we want good officiating from officials appointed to handle our matches.

Additionally, I also tried to point out to our referees the need to reject pressures and say NO to club officials who in their desperate attempts to win their matches at all cost, fair or foul, try to influence them.

The 2016 Premier League Board’s (PLB) awards ceremony was held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra last Friday.
