Africa Cup West rugby tourney...Ghana win bronze

The Ghana Rugby men’s team, Sevens Eagles,  has won the Bronze Cup after walloping their Nigerien counterparts 14-5   at the Africa Rugby Men’s Sevens “Africa Cup West” tournament in Lome, Togo.

Ghana had earlier beaten Benin 19-0 and Mali 15-0 in their poll B matches to rank number one in the combined ranking with 34 points.

They were followed by Niger 19 points, Togo (two points) and Mali (two points) and, who all proceeded to the semi-finals.

In another ranking match, fifth-placed Benin managed to silence Burkina Faso who placed sixth with 22 points to five to secure a fifth place ranking for the tournament.

Mali also managed to beat Niger 26-0 in the first semi-final with Togo managing to overcome Ghana 22-19 to set up a final between Togo and Mali, while Ghana and Niger competed for the third place honours.

Togo and Mali settled for 12 points each in the final and after two extra time periods, but Mali managed to score a try to win the tournament with 17-12 scoreline.

The president of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Herbert Mensah, was delighted at the efforts of the Ghanaian players and technical team as they fought to bring the cup home.

Mr Mensah also lauded the sponsors of the team, Primex (producers of the Gino brand of products) and Interplast for their support and expressed the hope that other corporate organisations would also come on board.
