Agent unhappy with Capital Bank

Dr Daniel K. Markin,  Executive Chairman of Uniex Ghana Limited, the agency that brokered the abortive Ghana Premier League sponsorship deal between the GFA and First Capital Plus Bank (now Capital Bank) has disclosed that the contract did not have a "suspension clause".

Capital Bank signed a $10 million, five-year deal with the GFA but truncated it in the second year citing restructuring of their organization as their reason.

However, Dr Markin describes the decision of the bank to suspend the contract as unfortunate adding that they are bound to face sanctions as a result of their actions.

"It's unfortunate that Capital Bank took that position to suspend the deal which is not in the contract that I reviewed myself between the two parties," Dr Markin told journalist last Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

"Well, the consequences are there for everybody to know, so I don't feel happy because they gave a dummy cheque for $10 million and they showed it to the whole world that they were sponsoring the league with $10million, so you can't stop midstream claiming you have challenges.

"I thought that the best thing that they could have done was to sit and have thorough discussions so that the Premier League clubs would also appreciate the situation, but I think they had some minimal discussions which were not thorough and it led to this.

The matter is now before the court which is not what I desired, so the court will decide," he lamented.

According to Dr Markin, Capital Bank did not indicate that the GFA failed to meet any contractual obligations as the reason for suspension but rather internal issues at the bank.

"The company never said the GFA did anything wrong; they said they had some challenges and that because of those challenges they want to suspend not terminate. We cannot suspend the league and wait for them to solve their problems so the league must continue and there are consequences in that?.

He also appealed to the GFA to consider granting free access to the stadium to women as a means of improving attendances at league games.
