Asante Kotoko part ways with 8 players, including captain Justice Blay

MTN FA Cup champions Asante Kotoko have officially released eight players following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

Among those departing is club captain Justice Blay, whose contract expired at the end of the season. Once a fan favorite and a key figure in midfield, Blay’s exit comes amid reports of disciplinary issues, which are believed to have influenced the decision not to offer him a contract renewal. 

Despite his leadership on the field, the club appears to be taking a new direction.

Also leaving the club is Michael Kyei Dwamena, a former WAFA midfielder, who completes a three-year spell with Kotoko. Renowned for his tireless work rate and consistent performances, Dwamena now becomes a free agent and is attracting interest from several local clubs.

Nigerian striker Fernando Wisdom Bassey, signed from Sporting Lagos in August 2024, has also been released. Despite featuring in 16 league matches, he managed just one goal, falling short of expectations.

Others shown the exit door include Daniel Adrian Adjetey, Kwasi Asante, Samuel Tenadu, and Sampson Eduku—all mid-season signings who struggled to make a significant impact. The technical team has deemed them surplus to requirements.

Sources close to the club indicate that these departures are part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at building a more competitive squad for the 2025/26 season. Kotoko will be Ghana’s sole representative in the CAF Confederation Cup, and the club is determined to make a strong showing.

While several players are exiting, the club has initiated contract renewal talks with key first-team members Frederick Asare, Andrews Ntim Manu, and Baba Yahaya. Negotiations are reportedly ongoing and expected to conclude before the start of pre-season.

In the transfer market, Kotoko are said to be in advanced talks with Hubert Gyau, Zakaria Fuseini, Francis Acquah, and other targets, as they look to reinforce key positions across the pitch.

Asante Kotoko recently secured their 10th FA Cup title with a hard-fought victory over Golden Kick SC, earning a spot in Africa’s second-tier club competition. With renewed ambition and a refreshed squad, the Porcupine Warriors are leaving no stone unturned as they prepare for a new era.
