Awuku must seize opportunity tonight —Zwennes

The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Peter Zwennes, has called on Ghanaian fighter, Maxwell Awuku, to seize the opportunity and make history when he challenges Mexico's Miguel "El Alacran" Berchelt tonight at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico for the WBC Super Featherweight Championship.

Mr Zwennes advised Awuku to learn from Habib Ahmed's uninspiring defeat in USA last Saturday to produce a magnificent performance since world title shots are not easy to come by.

Awuku (44-3-1, 30 KOs) was given the nod to challenge Berchelt after Fillipino Carlo Magali pulled out of the fight following a denial by the Boxing Commission of his country for not fulfilling a required rest period between fights.

With an outstanding record of (32-1, 28 KOs), Berchelt will be a hard nut to crack when he enters the ring to challenge for his first ever world championship title in an event promoted by Zanfer Promotions and Max Boxing in partnership with Cancun Boxing.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday, Mr Zwennes said, "He (Awuku) has to take his responsibility and make history for himself and the country."

"I believe he has to take the shot seriously because they are not easy to come by but Habib Ahmed's defeat must be a lesson for him," he added.

When asked about the short notice by which some Ghanaian boxers accepted world title fights, Mr Zwennes explained that it is sometimes difficult to let go of bouts of such nature because they are not easy to come by.

Awuku will be hoping to give a good account of himslef against the Mexican brawler who will be defending a title he won last year by knocking out Francisco "Bandido" Vargas.

Berchelt says he is ready to fight any opponent in his title defence and give a good account of himself on the night.

"We are ready for whoever; I have prepared myself at the top. It's good that the African is coming to cause an upset and wants to offer a great fight to my audience.

“My emotions grow knowing that I will be fulfilling my dream on February 10," said Berchelt in an interview.
