Ayornu, Yaba reign in Lipton Golf

Favourite Peter Amenyo’s back-to-back dream failed to materialise, Lawyer Akwasi Poku fell by the wayside, while Sam Jonah literally fizzled into thin air as Ayornu S. K. and golf’s ‘flashy lady’, Aku Yaba, grabbed the headlines as winners of this year’s last edition of the Lipton bi-monthly golf competition at the Tema Country Golf Course last Saturday.

Surprisingly, all the big names, except Joy Arkutu, Florence Etwi-Barimah and Hellen Appah, who were expected to mount a strong challenge to the crown, were unimpressive.

Sensational Owusu E. K., who played with a zero handicap, could only manage a disappointing fourth place, while business mogul, Sam Jonah, was out of the medal zone.

Last Saturday’s competition was to reward the best golfers in the competition for the last half of the year, but it turned out that the permutations could only allow for the present winners to be crowned.

Ayornu, with a handicap of four, beat E. J. Ocansey on countback after both had scored 70 net in the one-day 18-hole competition.

But ‘sophisticated’ Yaba was two strokes better than Arkutu (78 net) to win the ladies event, while Etwi-Barimah was third on 81 net.

Ayetey K. A. recorded 67 net score to win the men’s category B, while Petrina Galley (79 net) defeated retired nurse Hellen Appah by a stroke to win the ladies group B.
