Black Stars B must earn bonuses — Minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has revealed that the government has not set aside any money as winning bonuses for the Black Stars B who are currently participating in the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations.

According to the minister, per an agreement reached with the GFA ahead of the start of the competition, the players will only receive bonuses if they are able to clinch the $100,000 prize money at stake for the winners.

"For this particular tournament, what we have said and what I have told the GFA is that if God blesses us, there is a prize money of about $100,000 and if they finish the tournament successfully we will use some of that to pay the bonuses," Mr Asiamah told the Graphic Sports in an interview.

"For now, government has not set aside any money as their bonuses. If they win, we will give them some of that $100,000 as bonuses."

According to the minister, the government had done everything to ensure that Ghana hosts the tournament successfully.

The winner of the 16-nation competition which got underway last Saturday with hosts Ghana edging Gambia 1-0 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium will take home $100,000 while the runner-up will earn $50,000 for their efforts.

The third and fourth placed teams will take home $25,000 and $10,000 respectively while the four losing semi-finalists will earn $10,000 each and the four second round finishers will receive $5,000 each.
