19-year-old US-based defender Kelvin Lamptey-Mills wants to play for Ghana
Kelvin Lamptey-Mills, a 19-year-old Ghanaian-born US citizen, has set his sights on representing Ghana, despite interest from the United States men's national soccer team.
The center-back moved to the US at the age of 2 and has since pursued his football career in the MLS Next Pro and in Cyprus.
Although Lamptey-Mills holds US citizenship, he is eligible to play for both the United States and Ghana.
Having previously received an invitation to join the Black Meteors, the powerful defender has expressed a strong desire to play for Ghana, unless the opportunity with the national team never arises.
Last month, Lamptey-Mills completed a move to Cypriot club MEAP Nisou from Omonia.
In an interview with Kolog Bonaventure on One-on-One, Lamptey-Mills emphasized that he would gladly represent Ghana, proudly placing his hand on the national team badge, as it remains one of his biggest dreams to fulfill.
"Ghana needs to qualify for the World Cup again. And to get an invite to help the course, why not?
"I'm 100 per cent ready to play for Ghana especially the Black Stars though am not above the national U-23 but a call from any I will honor"We all have something to offer the national team", Mills said.
"The team must stay united when we bring in talented players with qualities that can make a difference. I am always ready to accept the call-up and do my part in helping us qualify," he said.
Lamptey revealed that a few weeks ago, his manager informed him that the US national team was keeping an eye on his progress and that he needed to improve his performance.
"My manager told me that the US team is monitoring me for a potential call-up, but my true pride lies in representing my mother and grandmother. It would be a dream come true for all of us. My grandma always encourages me to work hard and play for Ghana," the defender concluded.
Ghana will aim to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup after falling short of a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations, suffering a disappointing defeat to Sudan with a lackluster performance.
With World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, Ghana's head coach, Otto Addo, is likely to consider strengthening his squad in the coming weeks.
This presents an opportunity for the hardworking young defender, Kelvin Lamptey-Mills, to earn a call-up.
