Cricket: Everest crowned Diwali Cup champions

Everest Cricket Club have won the 2017 Diwali Cup for the second time in two years after beating Balagi Group of Companies (BGC) in the final last Sunday.

The annual event held at the Achimota Cricket Oval saw the defending champions winning the toss and electing to bat first. They scored 2014-3 in 20 overs in the first innings. Ramesh scored an outstanding over a century 106-59 while Bharani Kumar scored 61-43. Vikran, in the bowling figures took 2-25 in two overs, while Mahi 1-35 in four overs.

BGC, who lost the group phase game to Everest by eight wickets, scored 110-7 in 20 overs. Everest, therefore, won the game by 94 runs. Davinder scored 39-27 while Bhim scored 25-2. Koti took 3-7 in three overs, while Nani took 3-31 in four overs.

Captain of BGC, Amoluk Senbhi, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said they lost to a better side and that they needed to work harder to be able to beat them.

Amoluk, like other players in the 11 matches played, won Man of the Match award in their game against Dilmah and was presented with a home appliance from Binatone, who are one of the sponsors. He was also adjudged the Best Bowler of the tournament and was presented with a plaque.

Everest’s Ramesh, who had a fantastic tourney, was named as the Best Batsman, as well as the Man of the Series. He received appliances from Binatone and two plaques which were from ICK International.

Runners-up BGC received a trophy and silver medals, both from ICK International, while Everest received the giant trophy and Gold medals from Golden Dragon Casino, Osu.

The 2017 edition of the Diwali Cup was made a success by the collective effort of the Ghana Cricket Association and the India Association of Ghana. There was sponsorship from Golden Dragon Casino, Osu, ICK International and Binatone.

DIWALI is a festival celebrated by the Indians and the association in Ghana plays cricket to commemorate it every year.
