Dave Bishop makes strong pitch for GBA Second Vice President

American-born promoter, Dave Bishop promises grassroots revolution, commercial partnerships for Ghana boxing.

He came to Ghana to promote fights. Now, he wants to help run the sport.

Dave Bishop, founder and CEO of Bishop Boxing Promotions, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of Second Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) in the upcoming elective congress scheduled for Thursday, June 4.

The American-born Ghana-based promoter, who recently withdrew from the race for First Vice President, says his decision to seek the second slot is driven by a desire to serve rather than to compete.

"I am not a politician looking for a title," Bishop told Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview ahead of the elections. "I am a promoter and a community organiser. My approach is practical, community-centred, and results-driven."

From Detroit to Accra

Bishop, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Business Management from the Detroit College of Business, brings what he describes as a "unique blend" of promotional experience and grassroots community service.

He is the founder of Bishop Boxing Promotions (Ghana/West Africa), where he has built a reputation for producing professional events that showcase regional talent. His stable currently includes WBO Africa Super lightweight champion Faisal 'Poncho Power' Abubakari and rising prospect Majid Yakubu.

Beyond boxing, Bishop is the founder and CEO of Detroit Choice Events, creator of the nationally recognised Detroit Choice Awards, and has collaborated with major international brands including Clear Channel, Radio One, Heineken, and Disney Radio.

Community First

But it is his community development work that Bishop believes sets him apart from other candidates.

He serves as President of Global Friends Community Development in Accra and founded Dave's Choice Community Development Corp, organisations that provide youth development, career readiness, and life-skills programming for underserved communities.

In recognition of over 4,000 hours of volunteer service, Bishop will receive The President's Lifetime Achievement Award in October 2026.

His commitment to Ghana extends beyond boxing. In 2023, he was enstooled as Nana Ekow Amu II, Development Chief of Nyanfeku Ekroful in the Central Region, following his construction of a five-bedroom teachers' quarters and provision of borehole water for the community.

Academic Milestone

This June, Bishop will receive an Honorary Doctorate degree in Global Leadership and Sports Management from Kennedy University in Miami, Florida, United States.

He says the academic recognition, combined with his hands-on experience in event production and athlete management, positions him to help professionalise Ghanaian boxing.

Five-Point Agenda

If elected, Bishop has promised to focus on five key priority areas:

First, grassroots development through structured youth academies, mentorship programmes, and school partnerships to identify and nurture talent nationwide.

Second, modernisation of facilities and equipment, including upgrading community gyms and improving access to quality training gear.

Third, athlete welfare and post-career support, covering medical care, mental health services, financial literacy training, and career transition assistance for fighters.

Fourth, commercial growth through expanded regional and national event calendars, securing sponsorships, and increasing purses to create stable career tracks for boxers.

Fifth, governance and transparency, advocating for accountable GBA operations and improved administrative systems to strengthen stakeholder trust.

The Road Ahead

Bishop faces competition for the Second Vice President slot from Ellis Quaye of Cabic Boxing Promotions and veteran promoter Alhaji Moshud Zaid.

With the GBA currently operating under an Interim Management Committee (IMC), the June 4 congress at the Accra Sports Stadium is expected to chart a new course for Ghanaian boxing.

Bishop urged delegates and stakeholders to look beyond personalities and focus on the future of the sport.

"Ghanaian boxing deserves leadership that combines promotional expertise, community commitment, and principled stewardship," he said.

"If elected Second Vice President, I will dedicate my energy, networks, and experience to building stronger pathways for athletes, elevating the sport's professionalism, and ensuring lasting benefits for our boxing community."
