Dogboe, Kakembo to explode tonight

Two young boxers from Ghana and Uganda will set the Accra Sports Stadium alive tonight when they step in the ring to slug it out for the African featherweight title.

At the weigh-in yesterday at the D.G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium, both Isaac Dogboe and Edward Kakembo of Uganda weighed 126 pounds each and predicted victory respectively afterwards.

Kakembo vowed to devour Dogboe in the second round to end the fight, sarcastically referring to Dogboe as a dog whom he would chain after the bout, at the press briefing.

However, a calm-looking Dogboe sounded more spiritual. “I will take God into the ring and the Lord will fight for me,” he said.

Dogboe, a former Olympian and WBO African featherweight champion, has a perfect record of 10 victories out of 10 fights, while Kakembo, an African Boxing Union featherweight champion, is also unbeaten in 10 fights.

The Ghanaian whose promising career took off in the United Kingdom is aiming to use this bout as a stepping stone for a world title shot this year.

In his last bout, Dogboe pummelled fellow Ghanaian, Michael Pappoe, in a 12-round featherweight bout at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex at North Kaneshie.

The Ugandan has vowed to give the Ghanaian his toughest test yet in his young career. In his last fight, Kakembo, whose professional career began in 2013, recorded a split decision against Nigeria’s Waidi Usman to win the vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) featherweight title.

Other fights on the bill include a superwelterweight contest between Kyu-Sulk Lee and Mohammed Tagoe, while Felix Makattah take on Charles Tetteh in a six-round welterweight contest.
