Elmina Sharks coach beaten to a pulp
The head coach of Division One League (DOL) side, Elmina Sharks, was last Saturday beaten unconscious by rampaging fans during their league clash with Sekondi-based Proud United at the Sekondi Gyandu Park.
Coach Kobina Amissah was later revived at a hospital where he was treated of head injuries and bruises on.
A shaken Amissah, who managed to speak to the Graphic Sports on phone yesterday with some difficulty, identifed Kwame Peace and Badu Bode as those who allegedly masterminded the unprovoked attack on him, insisting said he could identify them if the opportunity availed itself.
Recounting the events that led to the attack on him Coach Amissah said “ Some supporters of Eleven Wise had threatened me on radio warning me not to step in Sekondi or I will see blood”.
The threats, according to coach Amissah, was in reaction to an interview he granted earlier on Aseda FM, a local radio station during which he responded to the threats by saying he will curse anyone who assaulted him in Sekondi.
“Later I realised I should not have said that because I was angry and emotional at the time of the interview and so I went further to apologise but these supporters of Eleven Wise would not listen and kept threatening me,” he explained.
He said just when he and his team were about to leave the Gyandu Park after their match against Proud United which they won, Kwame Peace confronted him on the comment he had made earlier on radio.
He said he quickly apologised but Peace would not budge and started heckling and pushing him.
This, the Sharks coach said, attracted some players who attempted to intervene but Peace overpowered them and later joined by Bode and some unidentified supporters who gave him a sound beating.
He said officials of Elmina Sharks later reported the incident to the Sekondi Police. Coach Amissah is currently nursing his injuries.
Meanwhile, George Wiredu, team manager of Elmina Sharks, has called on the football authorities to move the DOL matches to the Sekondi Stadium at Essipon since the Gyandu Park has outlived its usefulness.
