GFA casts net wide in UK for next generation of diaspora stars

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has intensified its pursuit of elite diaspora talent after successfully staging its first-ever talent identification programme in the United Kingdom, bringing together 40 highly-rated players of Ghanaian heritage from some of England's most prestigious football academies.

The initiative marks a significant shift in Ghana's recruitment strategy, with the FA moving to identify and engage promising players at a much earlier stage in their development rather than waiting until they are established professionals.

It is an approach rooted in a reality that has already transformed Ghana football.

Players of Ghanaian descent have become an increasingly important pillar of the national teams, with many of the Black Stars' leading figures, as well as members of the Black Queens and youth national sides, emerging from the diaspora talent pool spread across Europe and beyond.

Recognising the depth of talent available, the GFA has now moved to formalise its engagement process through a structured scouting and relationship-building programme designed to strengthen Ghana's talent pipeline for the future.

Held in Bromley, the programme brought together players aged between 15 and 20 currently enrolled in Category One academies across England, including renowned talent factories such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton.

The exercise was organised through a collaboration among the Ghana Football Association, Coach Hene Sports Club, the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom and Prince Lamona Consult.

Participants underwent extensive assessments under the supervision of GFA Technical Director Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah and FIFA Talent Coach, Stuart McLaren, with technical support from coaches of Coach Hene Sports Club, who closely monitored performances and identified standout prospects.

The scouting exercise followed a high-profile engagement session held two days earlier at the Ghana High Commission in London, where the GFA sought to deepen ties with players and their families and to outline its long-term vision for national team development.

The event attracted more than 200 participants, reflecting the growing interest among young footballers of Ghanaian descent and their families in opportunities to represent the country.

Among the prominent speakers were Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien, GFA President Kurt Simeon-Okraku and Dela Dzebu, the mother of Black Stars and Manchester City forward, Antoine Semenyo.

The message was clear that Ghana wants to build relationships with talented players long before rival nations come calling.

For the GFA, the initiative is about more than identifying footballers. It is about creating a sustainable pathway that keeps young players connected to their Ghanaian roots while offering a clear route into the country's youth and senior national teams.

The FA believes that engaging players during their formative years will increase the likelihood of securing their commitment and help build stronger, more competitive national teams in the future.

The successful pilot programme has already prompted plans for expansion, with the FA expected to extend the initiative to players in Category Two and Category Three academies, as well as to grassroots football structures across the United Kingdom and eventually, to other countries with large Ghanaian communities.

The move signals the beginning of a broader international scouting network designed to ensure that no eligible Ghanaian talent slips through the cracks.

As competition for dual-nationality players intensifies across world football, Ghana's latest move reflects a growing recognition that the battle for talent now begins long before players reach the professional ranks.
