Legon Cities thump Dreams FC 3-0 to end winless streak
Legon Cities produced an impressive second-half performance to demolish Dreams FC 3-0 in a vital Matchday 17 fixture of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
It was a dominant performance that ensured the home side ended the first round on a high as the victory lifted them from the bottom spot of the league table.
After a frustrating scoreless run spanning five matches, the home side finally found their rhythm, securing a much-needed first win in six attempts.
Goals from Fredrick Akatuk, Captain Frank Akoto, and substitute Raymond Agyemang sealed a commanding victory, lifting Legon Cities off the bottom of the table with 14 points, a point ahead of Accra Lions.
The match began with both teams struggling to assert dominance, as the opening 45 minutes unfolded with very little to excite the sparse crowd.
Dreams FC showed early promise, coming close on two occasions in the 28th and 29th minutes, but failed to break the deadlock.
Legon Cities, though underwhelming in the first half, responded by ramping up the pressure. A quick passing move in the 32nd minute almost led to a breakthrough, but the final touch was lacking.
A late offside decision on Williams Adjei in the 41st minute summed up the frustrating first half, with neither side managing to test the goalkeeper properly.
The second half, however, saw a complete turnaround. Within a minute of the restart, Legon Cities tested Dreams FC goalkeeper Aseako Gidisu, and they continued to build momentum. A powerful shot from defender Suraj Yusuf Kamal in the 49th minute was punched away by Gidisu, but the breakthrough arrived soon after.
A flowing move down the right wing resulted in a pinpoint cross from Emmanuel Gyamfi, who cleverly dummied the ball into the path of Fredrick Akatuk.
The former Asante Kotoko forward wasted no time, sweeping the ball past Gidisu from close range to give the home side the lead.
It was Legon Cities’ first goal in six matches, ending a long dry spell that stretched back to their 2-1 win over Berekum Chelsea on November 17.
Dreams FC, struggling in the relegation zone, threw everything forward in search of an equaliser.
Coach Winfred Dormon made all five allowed substitutions, with their captain Joseph Esso’s mazy runs causing some concern for the home defence.
However, despite mounting pressure, the away side couldn’t break through.
Legon Cities doubled their lead in the 76th minute when the captain, Frank Akoto, capitalised on another goalmouth scramble to head home from a corner. It was another moment of frustration for Dreams FC, whose defensive woes were compounded as the match wore on.
Dreams’ best chance at a consolation came deep into injury time. Isaac Yaro found himself in front of an open goal following a scramble, but Legon Cities’ goalkeeper, Kwame Aziz, performed a stunning reflex save on the line, preserving his team’s clean sheet.
There was still time for more drama as Legon Cities sealed their win with a swift counter-attack. As Dreams FC committed bodies forward in search of a goal, substitute Albert Yeboah surged down the left wing and delivered a perfect cross to fellow substitute Raymond Agyemang.
The debutant powered his header into the net to make it 3-0 and complete an emphatic return to winning ways for the home side.
