Ghana para swimmer Promise Aheto qualifies for 2026 Commonwealth Games
Ghana Para Sports has achieved a historic milestone with its first-ever qualification to the Commonwealth Games, secured by para swimmer Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto.
He will represent Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026.
Aheto earned qualification through a bipartite slot following his classification and impressive performance at the World Para Swimming Series in Australia in February 2026.
He recorded personal best times of 1:38.58 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke S9 and 31.72 in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S13, making him eligible to compete in either event at the Games.
This achievement marks a significant step forward for para sports development in Ghana, reflecting growing institutional support and progress in the sector.
The Ghana Para Sports expressed appreciation to key stakeholders, including Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavie, 2026 Commonwealth Games Chef de Mission Farida Ayishatu Idriss, Ghana Para Swimming leadership, and the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana, for their administrative and financial support, which contributed to this success.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to empowering athletes with disabilities to excel internationally and represent Ghana on the global stage.
