Immigration Ladies target Women’s League

Having survived three relegation battles which compelled them to make some drastic changes in their team, Immigration Ladies say they are in to win this season’s National Women’s League (NWL) and will work hard to achieve that.

After eight matches, Accra-based Immigration are second on the southern zone league table with 14 points behind the leaders, Sea Lions, who have 17 points.

However, Immigration could bridge the point gap if they are awarded the three points against Holy Royals who failed to show up for their Match Day Eight fixture at the Carl Reindorf Park when the second round of the league resumed last Saturday.

If that happens, then the race for the southern zone title will be a tight one between the top two teams as they will have the same goal difference, but Immigration are counting on their experience to clinch it and avoid any head-to-head decision.

Coach Douglas Addy told the Graphic Sports that after four years in the league, it was time for them to have something to show for it by winning the league.

“I guess at the start of the season, every club had their target; for us, it was to have a double -- the league and Sanford FA Cup titles. Thankfully, we are on course and we hope to be in the final at the end of the competition,” said Coach Addy, who took over from Joseph Badger at the beginning of the season.

He attributed their fine form this season to the assessment made on their performance over the past seasons. In the last two seasons, they escaped relegation by a whisker, and have therefore resolved to avoid another ordeal.

“Seasons past, we had a good team but we could not challenge for the title. So after some self-assessment, some painful decisions were taken and so far, the positive effects of those changes are being felt and should we continue this way, there is no way we cannot be champions,” Coach Addy emphasised.

Immigration will have a tough time trying to dislodge Sea Lions from the top as they are also keen on a double.

In just their second season, the club has been the most impressive side so far, and their 3-1 win over former champions Hasaacas Ladies last Saturday is indicative of their determination to win the NWL title.

Sea Lions lead the pack, followed in second place by Immigration, LadyStrikers (13 points), Police Ladies (12), Soccer Intellectuals (11), Samaria Ladies (eight), Hasaacas Ladies (seven) and Holy Royals (one) in that order in the southern zone.

In the northern zone, defending champions, Ampem Darkoa, lead with 20 points, Kumasi Sports Academy Ladies are second with 19 points, followed by Fabulous Ladies (15), Ashtown Ladies (11), Lepo Ladies (eight), Northern Ladies (six), Real Upper Ladies (three) in that order.
