Kwesi Appiah targets AFCON glory with Sudan
Sudan's head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has set his sights on winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco.
The Ghanaian coach led Sudan to qualification under difficult conditions, with the team playing all of their home games away due to the ongoing civil war.
Despite these challenges, Sudan demonstrated resilience and determination, securing a spot in the tournament by edging out Ghana, earning four points from their qualifying matches against them.
“Winning the trophy is my goal,” Appiah said in an interview with Akoma FM. “By God’s grace, we have qualified. We will prepare thoroughly to ensure we have a strong team before the AFCON. Once you’re in, you aim for the cup rather than coming out with nothing.”
Appiah emphasized the unpredictable nature of football, pointing to Ivory Coast's victory in the 2023 AFCON as proof of the sport's surprises.
"Nothing is impossible in football. No team should be underestimated," he stated.
Qualified teams include Morocco (hosts), Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
