Millennium marathon regional race starts in Tamale tomorrow

The second edition of the highly acclaimed international millennium marathon will commence its preparatory regional marathons on March 19 in the Northern regional capital of Tamale.

Ten regional races will take place in all regional capitals of Ghana in anticipation of the main international marathon on September 3. The regional marathons this year will be launched by the minister for youth and sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuje in Tamale.

The theme for this year’s marathon is: “Africa on the run for peace and health”

The regional marathons, which will commence on the March 19 in the Northern and Upper West regions, will continue in the Upper East region, the Brong Ahafo region, the Eastern and Western regions, the Ashanti region, Central region, Volta region and come to a close in the Greater Accra region on June 11.

The climax of the Marathon will be in Accra on September 3 which will see well- acclaimed international runners from all over the world, elite Ghanaian athletes, and corporate bodies, keep fit clubs, social runners, students and members of the diplomatic corps participating.

The Millennium Marathon race is a certified global partner and member of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and the Association of International Marathons (AIMS), and is in collaboration with international race Director, Haile Gebreselassie, the greatest and finest runner of all time.

This year’s run is an important one, as it is  geared towards raising awareness and providing support for the United Nation’s sustainable development goals(SDG’s) mainly in the areas of good health, well-being, peace and security in the continent as well us encouraging the youth to take sports seriously in order to improve Ghana’s chances in international sports events.

The main race, scheduled for the 3rd of September will cover a distance of 21km while the regional marathons cover 10.5 km.

Winners of the regional marathon will take home prizes and will also be automatically qualified for the international 21km race.

Two brand new Peugeot cars have also been set aside for the first male and female Ghanaians to finish first as well as a total of 150,000 dollars in cash and prizes for winners and runners up.

The Millennium Marathon is sponsored by Peugeot/ WATS ltd, daily graphic, H2O water Ethiopia Airline, the Movenpick ambassador hotel, Ayrton drugs, Total, and Africa world airlines among others.

The upcoming Marathon will see over 100,000 athletes competing for the coveted prize.
