Mohamed Salah to leave Liverpool at and of the season

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the club announced on Tuesday, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield in which he established himself as one of the club’s greatest players.

Liverpool confirmed that Salah, 33, has “reached an agreement” to depart a year before his contract was due to expire. Sources told ESPN that the deal will allow him to leave on a free transfer.

In a statement, the club said: “Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool Football Club at the end of the 2025–26 season.

“The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

“Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.”

The Egypt international has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285). He also ranks fourth among the Premier League’s all-time top scorers with 191 goals.

Since joining from Roma in 2017, Salah has helped Liverpool win eight major trophies, including two Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League.

In a video posted on X, Salah reflected on his time at the club:
“I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, and these people would become part of my life.

“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, a history, a spirit. We celebrated victories, won the biggest trophies, and stood together through difficult times.

“To the fans, I don’t have enough words. Your support during the best moments of my career and in the toughest times is something I will never forget.

“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home.”

Salah had signed a two-year contract extension last April, tying him to the club until 2027 after playing a key role in Liverpool’s record-tying 20th league title. However, his form has dipped this season, and he was dropped for three consecutive games late last year.

Tensions appeared to rise following an explosive interview in which Salah accused the club of throwing him “under the bus.” He also suggested he had little relationship with manager Arne Slot and cast doubt over his future during the January transfer window. He was later omitted from the squad for a Champions League match against Inter Milan.

Although he was reintegrated into the team after the Africa Cup of Nations, Salah has struggled to regain the form that saw him win the Premier League Golden Boot four times.

Liverpool return from the international break with an FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester City and a Champions League quarterfinal tie against Paris Saint-Germain. With seven league matches remaining, the club is still pushing to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

“While there is still plenty to play for this season, Salah remains fully focused on helping the team finish as strongly as possible,” the club said. “The time to celebrate his legacy will come later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”
