Ghana’s last man standing in boxing competition, Amadu Mohammed, faces a date with destiny this afternoon as he seeks a place in tomorrow’s gold medal fight against Jye Dixon of Australia at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Mohammed, 21, already assured of at least a bronze medal for making the semi finals of the 55 kg (bantamweight) division, remains the only Ghanaian boxer still in contention in Glasgow following the elimination of the rest of the nine teammates at the end of the quarter finals last Wednesday evening.
The Accra 2023 African Games gold medal winner is, however, unrelenting in his quest to end the country’s 28-year wait for the ultimate at the quadrennial games, Ghana having last won gold through Raymond Narh, also in boxing at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
But in also 21-year-old Dixon, Mohammed faces a formidable opponent who stopped Bangladeshi challenger Md Rakib Hossain in round two in the quarter finals, having also strolled to a resounding 5-0 unanimous victory over Lesotho’s Mathealira Seholoholo in the round of 16.
The Ghanaian however remains focused on his own strengths and is counting on his corner led by the vastly experienced long time national team head coach, Ofori Asare, to edge though to the gold medal fight and closer to history.
Ready to deliver
“Getting this far is by the grace of God and the hard work of my coaches. They have been there since day one, we have suffered together from camp in Winneba to Belfast to here, so we can’t disappoint,” the boxer told the Daily Graphic on making the medal zone in Glasgow.
“We thank God almighty but we are not done yet, we are in the semi finals now so Ghanaians should keep on praying for us to bring the gold medal home,” Mohammed said.
Coach Asare who has overseen several medal successes including two silver and bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, says gold is the target in Glasgow.
“We are looking for a quality medal. We’ve won silver, we’ve won bronze so we know Ghana is looking for gold, and by the grace of God we will give Ghanaians what they are looking for,” he said.
Meanwhile in judo, 17-year-old Frema Agyei – Team Ghana’s flagbearer at last week’s opening ceremony – begins her 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign against Adama Sesay of Sierra Leone in women’s round of 16 today.
In track cycling, Erica Sedzro, 30, competes in both women's 4000m Individual Pursuit Qualifying and Women's Sprint qualifying, while 19-year-old Farrakhan Shaaban Mohammed competes in Men's 4000m Individual Pursuit Qualifying and Men's Keirin First Round heat 3.
