Traore had opened the scoring in the 27th minute to send his side into the break with a narrow lead, thanks to an assist from Zambia international Rainford Kalaba.

However, Stade Malien’s striker Ismaël Koné pulled a goal back in the 74th minute, before levelling the matters two minutes later.

Two other Ghanaian players Richard Kissi Boateng and Yaw Frimpong, were handed starting roles for Mazembe by head coach, Patrice Carteron.

On the same night, three other Ghanaians were also in action as Augustine Okrah and Francis Cofie clashed with Harrison Afful in the Al Merreikh of Sudan versus Esperance of Tunisia encounter in Khartoum.

Despite his experience, the night belonged to Okrah and Coffie as they helped Al Merreikh to a slender 1-0 win.

The return encounters of the Champions League will be in two weeks.
