NSA must not rule out govt — Prof Dodoo

The president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Professor Francis Dodoo, has allayed the fears of Ghanaians over the uncertainty of Ghana’s participation at the upcoming Olympics set for Rio in August.

He said his outfit was committed to participating in the games despite fears that the lack of funding from government could be a drawback.

According to the country’s Olympic chief, he has been contacted by some foreign-based athletes since the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Joe Kpenge, stated that Ghana’s participation at the Olympics could be in doubt due to funding problems.

But in reaction, Prof Dodoo contended that it was premature for anyone to rule out government funding, especially when the games were six clear months away.

“We are committed to going to the Olympics and we don’t don’t think it is time to rule government out of the funding scheme,” he told the Graphic Sports.

“I think it’s quite dangerous and discouraging for someone to come out with such statements because it will surely kill the motivation of our athletes,” argued Prof Dodoo, who is also president of the Ghana Athletics Federation.

Talking about funding of the various national teams preparations to the Olympics, the former national athlete explained that the GOC was only mandated to fly the teams to the Olympic Games.

He stressed that the NSA was responsible for preparing the teams and handing them over with funding to the GOC.
