The first batch of 25 players expected to form the core of the new Black Starlets squad is set to commence camping at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram today.
Under the guidance of the newly-appointed Head Coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, the team will undergo a series of screening sessions and assessment matches aimed at selecting the final squad for upcoming international engagements.
The players will be in camp for one week, during which they will play several friendly matches to allow the technical team to evaluate their performance.
Sources close to the team indicate that Coach Ogum is keen on strengthening the side ahead of their participation in next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana will be making a return to the continental tournament for the first time in eight years, having previously dominated the competition and won it twice, in 1995 and 1999.
This marks Coach Ogum’s first assignment with the national U-17 side, and he is determined to make an impact by guiding the Starlets back to continental glory and securing qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Over the years, the Black Starlets have been handled by several notable coaches, including Abdul Karim Zito, Paa Kwasi Fabin, Sellas Tetteh, David Duncan, Sam Arday, Isaac Paha, Emmanuel Afranie and Jones Attuquayefio.
The team has also produced some of Ghana’s finest football talents, such as, Nii Odartey Lamptey, Mohammed Gargo, Yaw Preko, Charles Akonnor, Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Michael Essien, Samuel Inkoom, Mubarak Wakaso, Ransford Osei and Daniel Opare, among others.
