Okwawu risk DOL demotion over indebtedness to Coach Castro

Last year’s MTN FA Cup runners-up, Okwawu United, could have their dream of returning to the elite league scuppered after being threaten with  demotion from the Division One League (DOL) if they fail to pay their  ex-coach, Sarfo Castro, an amount of GH¢45,000 owed him by April 9, 2018.

The said amount represents outstanding salaries and other benefits contained in the contract of employment, which was terminated by the club last season.

A ruling by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee also  also fined the club GH¢1, 000  for their refusal to respect the Player Status Committee decision dated May 13, 2016,  in respect of their GH¢45,000 debt owed coach Castro.

Coach Castro reported Okwawu to the GFA last month over their failure to respect an earlier decision by the Player Status Committee to pay him all monies due him during his time with the team.

“In the event that the above-mentioned amount is not paid within the aforementioned deadline, the present matter shall be submitted to the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee for consideration and a formal decision per Article 63 of the GFA Disciplinary Code,” the statement said.

However, the Disciplinary Committee ruled on the matter and applied article 63 of the GFA code of ethics which noted that "Pursuant to article 63(1) (a) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, Okwawu United FC is hereby fined an amount of One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢1,000.00), payable to the GFA upon receipt of this letter for failing to comply with the Review Committee’s decision within the stipulated time".

"Pursuant to Article 63(1)(b) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, your club is hereby given a final deadline to pay the full amount of Forty Five Thousand Cedis (GH¢45,000) to Mr Sarfo Castro on or before close of business, Friday, April 7, 2017 without fail,” the statement added.

Further, Okwawu is to “suffer a three-point deduction from your accumulated points for each match played after the deadline, a transfer ban for a period of one year should your club fail to pay the amount in full, six (6) months after the deadline October 9 and suffer demotion if your club fail to pay the amount in full one (1) year after the deadline," it concluded.
