Rio 2016: Christian Amoah eliminated from men’s weightlifting

Ghana’s sole representative in weightlifting at the 2016 Olympic Games, Christian Amoah, was unable to reach the next round of the men's 85 kilogramme (kg) category as his 157kg clean and jerk lift was ruled-out by the jury on Friday.

Amoah's lift was initially adjudged a good lift by the three referees but minutes later, the five-member jury overturned their decision.

His previous attempts of 130kg in the snatch and 153kg in the clean and jerk lifts rather stood and those scores were not enough to grant him qualification to the next round.

According to the the rules of the weightlifting event, the Jury’s decision cannot be challenged.

The 17-year-old finished bottom of the Group B standings in 11th place with 283 points.

Amoah became the fifth athlete from Ghana's 16-person contingent to be eliminated from the 2016 Olympic Games.
