Royal Ladies shine at SWAG Awards with top honour
The GRA Royal Ladies Hockey Team basked in glory last Saturday as they were crowned Female Club of the Year at the 49th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards held in Accra.
The defending champions of the African Club Hockey Championship edged out Women’s Premier League side, Hasaacas Ladies, to claim the coveted title, marking a historic milestone for the team.
Speaking to GNA Sports after the ceremony, an elated Elizabeth Opoku, captain of the GRA Royal Ladies, expressed her pride at the team’s achievement. “We feel very honoured to win this award for the first time because we have really worked hard for it over the previous years,” she said.
Opoku’s celebration was twofold, as she also clinched the Female Hockey Player of the Year Award for an impressive fourth time.
Reflecting on the personal accolade, she added, “I want to thank SWAG for recognising my hard work. This award will motivate me to do even better for both club and country.”
The team’s coach, Madam Ida Marmon-Halm, was equally delighted with the recognition, crediting her players for their dedication and resilience. “I am very proud of the team and always give credit to the ladies. We are well-prepared for the African
Championship, and while all eyes will be on us in Egypt, we are fully motivated to make Ghana proud,” she remarked.
The Head of Sports at the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ebenezer Sarpong, commended the team for their dedication and success.
“We are very delighted at GRA, especially with the ladies who won this award. It has been a long year for them, and they truly deserve to be recognised as Female Club of the Year.
“The management of GRA has supported the team as they prepare to defend their African title in Egypt, and we are optimistic that they will bring home the cup,” he added.
The GRA Royal Ladies’ recognition follows a stellar year, highlighted by their top finish in the Greater Accra Hockey League and their dominance on the continental stage. With their eyes now set on defending their African Club Championship title, the Royal Ladies are determined to keep raising the flag of Ghana high.
