Yeboah wins top prize at SWAG Awards

It was a night of celebration and shining triumphs at the 49th SWAG Awards, where high jump sensation Rose Yeboah stole the spotlight with a breathtaking double win, clinching both Sports Personality of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year.

But the evening wasn’t just about her incredible achievements—Ghana’s sporting elite gathered to witness a dazzling array of accolades across all disciplines, from athletics to football, boxing to cycling.

With Vice-President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang delivering a stirring tribute to the visionaries behind the event, the night celebrated not just the stars of today, but the dreamers who paved the way for Ghana’s rich sporting legacy.

Stepping in as a last-minute representative for President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice-President lauded the SWAG Awards as a platform that has, for nearly half a century, provided recognition for the nation's athletes, coaches, and administrators.

She added a personal touch by presenting a heartfelt birthday gift to SWAG President, Kwabena Yeboah, who celebrated his birthday just a day before.

In an emotional moment, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also had the honour of presenting the Sports Journalist of the Year award to Bright Kankam Boadu of Kumasi-based Pure FM, acknowledging his exemplary contribution to sports reporting.

However, the evening’s real showstopper came with Rose Yeboah’s remarkable triumph.

The high jump star’s stellar performances throughout 2023, including at the Accra 2023 African Games, the Paris 2024 Olympics, and multiple events in the United States, were the driving forces behind her recognition.

"This is such a pleasant evening for me, and I am grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way," Rose said, her eyes filled with emotion as she reflected on her journey.

During her address, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang took a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of the SWAG Awards. “This is the 49th edition of the SWAG Awards.

At times like this, I think of those who conceived this idea—those who believed this was important and made it happen,” she remarked.

“They may not have had the resources we have now, but they had dreams. You’ve done incredibly well to keep those dreams alive.” The night embodied the spirit of celebration, joy, and achievement, leaving a lasting impression on the distinguished guests and sports figures in attendance.

The event also honoured some of Ghana's brightest sporting talents from various fields. Edward Gadayi was named Male Athlete of the Year, while Abdul Aziz Issah was recognised as the Male Footballer of the Year. Jonathan Sowah of Medeama SC, whose impressive performances on the local scene earned him the Home-based Male Footballer of the Year award, was among the night's honourees.

On the women’s side, Comfort Yeboah of Ampem Darkoa Ladies was crowned Home-based Female Footballer of the Year, while

Thelma Baffoe Atuah claimed the Foreign-based Female Footballer of the Year award.

Desmond Ofei, the tactical mastermind behind the Black Satellites, was named Coach of the Year, as his team was also awarded National Team of the Year for their impressive performances.

Among other notable winners were Amadu Mohammed, Boxer of the Year, Alexander Adjei, Beach Soccer Player of the Year, Abeku Jackson, Swimmer of the Year, and Emmanuel Sesi, Cyclist of the Year.

The night proved to be a true reflection of the nation's sports talent and the achievements of its finest.
