Rugby: Conquerers crowned champions

 New entrants, Conquerors SC, marked a sensational debut season after blowing away Dansoman Hurricanes 28-3 to win the 2015/16 Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) after the final match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

They took home gold medals, a trophy and a cash prize of GH¢4,000 while Hurricances received silver medals, a trophy and GH¢3,000 cash.

Cosmos Buffaloes RFC the bronze medals, received a trophy and GH¢2,000 cash for finishing third. 

 

En route to last Saturday’s final, Conquerors SC beat Idas Sports 39-6 in the semi-finals while Hurricanes shattered the dreams of Cosmos Buffaloes 13-7 to book a place in the final.

The two clubs exhibited quality rugby much to the admiration of the fans.

It was a remarkable feat by Conquerors who were undefeated throughout the championship  and go into the next season as one of the favourites.

Idas Sports were no match for dethroned champions Cosmos Buffaloes who won the third-place match 48-18.

The Coach of Conquerors SC, Simba Mangena, who was happy with the standard of play, lauded the efforts of his player.

“I extend my gratitude to the players for putting up an outstanding performance on the day and I’m happy every player of my team came out to do his job to make the day successful.

“I always say that club rugby is the building grounds for international superstars and it is good to see our clubs in Ghana developing,” he said.

The president of the Ghana Rugby Football Union GRFU), Herbert Mensah, was happy about the standard of play and hoped that the trend would continue.

The next season of the GRCC is expected to commence in October.
