Sunyani, next stop for Millenium Marathon

Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, has promised to upstage previous hosts of the Regional Millenium Marathon by recording a massive turnout when it takes its turn for the event on Saturday.

Last week close to a 1,000 people participated in the event in Wa, 100 people more than the Tamale event, but Sunyani says the record will be broken.

To indicate their eagerness, participants took the initiative to register for the 10.5 km race even before organisers formally began the registration process.

Nana Yaw Boamah, a resident of Sunyani, told the Daily Graphic he and his friends had registered not because they had their eyes set on the ultimate, but just to be part of the ‘Great run’.

“I’m a great fan of Haile Gebrselassie, the Marathon legend from Ethiopia, so when I got to know that he was associated with the Millennium Marathon, I just wanted to be part of it. I’m not a great runner, so winning the ultimate is not my target. I just want to be part of the show,” he told the Daily Graphic in a telephone interview.

The Regional Millennium Marathon is part of a road show targeted at promoting the main event in Accra on September 6.
Apart from prizes to be awarded to the first three winners in the male and female categories, the respective champions will also automatically qualify for the September 6 event.
