
UEW to host 29th GUSA Games, Prof. Antwi chairs Local Organising Committee
The 29th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games has officially been launched, with the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) marking a significant milestone in preparations.
Former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Victor Antwi has been appointed as Chairman of the LOC for the Games.
Scheduled for 2026, the Games will bring together student-athletes from 16 public universities across Ghana to compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines, including athletics, basketball, football, hockey, volleyball, handball, and more.
Beyond showcasing athletic talent, the event aims to promote unity and camaraderie among participating institutions.
In his remarks, Prof. Antwi encouraged LOC members to commit wholeheartedly to the planning and execution of a successful tournament. He also called on all stakeholders to contribute meaningfully toward making the 29th edition the most impactful in the history of the GUSA Games.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, said the UEW’s pride in being chosen as host of the prestigious event.
He reaffirmed the University's commitment to delivering a world-class tournament and highlighted the transformative power of university sports in fostering discipline, dedication, and teamwork.
Prof. Mitchual also announced plans to upgrade UEW’s sports infrastructure, with the goal of setting new benchmarks for university-level competitions in Ghana.
President of GUSA, Mr Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, conveyed his deep appreciation to UEW for embracing the opportunity to host the Games.
He commended the University's ongoing investment in sports development and its efforts to nurture the next generation of national sports icons.
Mr Tanko urged all stakeholders to come together in organizing an inspiring and memorable event.
“Together, let us make these Games a remarkable celebration of sportsmanship and a testament to what we can achieve when we unite with purpose and passion,” he said.
The launch ceremony was attended by several distinguished personalities, including Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, UEW, Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, Prof. Jonathan Ammah, Dean, Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences, and Home Economics Education, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Principal of UEW College of Languages, Prof. Mrs Rebecca Akpanglo-Nartey, and Dean of Students, Dr. Mrs Edinam Avoke.
