VIDEO: Rooney reassures Ghanaian defender diagnosed with cancer
Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has assured defender Chris Odoi-Atsem of the support of DC United as he begins treatment for cancer.
DC United revealed Tuesday that right back Odoi-Atsem has been diagnosed with Stage Two Hodgkin’s lymphoma and will soon begin four months of chemotherapy at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
The shock revelation about the 23-year-old who has Ghanaian parents has triggered an outpouring of support from the entire MLS as well as his DC United teammates Rooney and playmaker Luciano Acosta.
"Hey Chris, just a quick message to tell you to stay strong," Rooney says in a video shared by the club.
"We know it's a difficult situation you are in but you are a fighter, you'll get through it and we are all behind you. Here at DC United we will all support you through whatever you are going through and help you every step of the way."
