Wa All Stars return to the top

A sublime goal by Richard Arthur handed All Stars a 1-0 victory over Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Wa Park to return to the top of the Ghana Premier League log on superior goal difference ahead of Hearts of Oak who have a game in hand.

The victory also ended Kotoko’s impressive four-match winning run under interim coach Michael Osei.

Arthur connected home Maxwell Baakoh’s corner-kick in the 15th minute to send the home fans into wild celebration.

In fact, the home side capitalised on their first corner-kick of the match to take the lead. In an attempt by Kotoko defender Edwin Frimpong to head clear from the  penalty box, the ball landed at the foot of the unmarked striker who shot to the blind side of goalkeeper Ernest Sowah from a close range.

Both teams played an attacking game but it was Kotoko who should have scored first in the 10th minute.

However, Theophilus Nyame shot straight at goalkeeper Richard Ofori after he was put through by Sarfo Gyamfi.

Three minutes later, Bennette Ofori’s curling effort over on-rushing Ofori was scooped off the goal line in the 13th minute by All Stars’ Ganiu Abdul Ismai, who played a solid defensive game yesterday.

Tried as Kotoko did to find the equalising goal, goalkeeper Ofori stood solidly in their way as he made three brilliant saves before halftime.

After recess, Kotoko’s caretaker coach Michael Osei threw on Kojo Poku and Halipha Sodogo for Eric Donkor and Stephen Nyarko respectively who nearly found the back of the net in the 75th minute after a great build-up, but Poku shot wide with only goalkeeper Ofori at his mercy.
