World Table Tennis Day: Legon, Veterans unite in thrilling showdown

In a vibrant display of skill, camaraderie, and sporting spirit, the University of Ghana, Legon, Table Tennis team locked rackets with the Veterans Table Tennis Association (VTTAG) in an electrifying competition at the University of Ghana Sports Gymnasium in Accra yesterday.

The event, held to commemorate World Table Tennis Day, brought together players of all ages under the theme, “Table Tennis: The Best Holistic Health Sport for All Ages,” transforming the gymnasium into a hub of energy and enthusiasm.

The competition, an all-play-all contest, saw fierce yet friendly battles between the youthful vigor of Legon’s table tennis squad and the seasoned prowess of the veterans.

The presence of African table tennis icon Ethel Jacks added a layer of prestige to the event, as she cheered on both sides, inspiring players and spectators alike.

The gymnasium buzzed with excitement as young and old gathered to witness the thrilling rallies and strategic spins that defined the day.

A Day of Diplomacy and Development

Beyond the competitive spirit, the event carried a deeper mission. Mr. Christopher King, President of VTTAG, emphasized that the competition was not just a celebration of World Table Tennis Day but a strategic move to foster “ping-pong diplomacy” with the University of Ghana, the nation’s premier academic institution.

Drawing parallels to the historic role of table tennis in bridging diplomatic ties between China and the United States in the 1970s, King highlighted the sport’s unique ability to connect people and communities.

“This competition is about more than just winning matches. It’s about building bridges, nurturing talent, and growing the sport within the university and beyond,” King declared.

He called on the government to invest in table tennis, noting its potential to unite communities and promote holistic health. “The sport can’t stop growing, but it needs support to reach its full potential,” he urged.

A Healthful Sport for All

The event also spotlighted the health benefits of table tennis, a sport renowned for its physical and mental advantages. Eric Kemeh, the honorary coach for table tennis at the University of Ghana, Legon, underscored the transformative impact of the game.

“Table tennis is not just about physical fitness; it sharpens the mind, improves eyesight, and, according to studies, can even help prevent dementia,” Kemeh explained. He expressed optimism that the competition would mark a turning point for the sport at Legon, igniting interest among students and faculty alike.

Kemeh called on the youth to embrace table tennis, emphasizing its accessibility and benefits for players of all ages.

“This is a sport that grows with you, from childhood to old age. We want to see more young people picking up the paddle and taking it seriously,” he said.

A Legacy in the Making

The World Table Tennis Day celebration at Legon was more than a one-day event; it was a bold step toward establishing a lasting legacy for the sport at the university.

Both VTTAG and the University of Ghana expressed their commitment to nurturing table tennis, with plans for future collaborations, training programs, and tournaments to engage students and the wider community.

As the final matches concluded, the gymnasium echoed with applause and laughter, a testament to the unifying power of sport.

For the players, spectators, and organizers, the day was a resounding success, blending competition, health advocacy, and a shared vision for the growth of table tennis in Ghana.

With the echoes of yesterday’s rallies still resonating, the University of Ghana and VTTAG have set the stage for a new era of table tennis excellence, proving that when it comes to this dynamic sport, age is just a number, and passion knows no bounds.
