I want agriculture to be Ghana’s biggest revenue driver - AgroCenta CEO Francis Obirikorang

The CEO of AgroCenta, Francis Obirikorang, has expressed his ambition for agriculture to become Ghana’s leading source of national income, with young people regarding farming careers with the same pride as professions such as law or medicine.

Speaking on Springboard, Your Virtual University with Rev. Albert Ocran, he said: “When people pass to the bar, you see photoshoots and celebrations. When have you seen that for agricultural college graduates? Never.”

Mr Obirikorang outlined how artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to address key challenges in Ghanaian agriculture. “One major issue is fertiliser use. We sell the same fertiliser all over the country, but the soil in the north needs a different mix than the south. AI can help customise fertiliser blends for specific locations,” he explained.

He stressed the importance of research, noting that advanced countries invest heavily in data collection which feeds into national systems to support AI-driven solutions.

Addressing the image problem associated with farming, Mr Obirikorang said: “Agriculture is often seen as work only for old people, but it covers many activities in the value chain. We must change that perception if we want young people involved.”

On how AI can help farmers directly, he added that technology such as voice services and SMS remains critical, as complex systems can seem intimidating and risk being rejected by users.

The CEO also underlined the role of climate-smart farming, highlighting how AI can be used for accurate weather forecasting. “Instead of vague predictions, farmers can know exactly when it will rain,” he said.

The conversation formed part of the ongoing AI series on Springboard, Your Virtual University, which explores how technology can be harnessed to improve lives.
