Logistics industry critical to national economies - McDan Group CEO to stakeholders
The founder and CEO of the McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley, has emphasised the vital role of local ownership, innovation, and partnerships in transforming Africa’s logistics sector, calling logistics an “engine for growth in every economy.”
“Success is inevitable when opportunity meets preparedness,” Dr. McKorley remarked, urging logistics stakeholders to capitalise on the sector’s opportunities while tackling its challenges.

He made these statements as keynote speaker at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Conference and Annual General Meeting in Accra, held from October 22-24, 2024.
The conference, themed “Logistics and Transport Operations in the Green and Circular Economy,” brought together industry leaders to discuss pressing issues and emerging opportunities in the logistics landscape.
In his speech, Dr. McKorley underscored the importance of honesty and integrity in logistics, stating, “In logistics, you need to be honest and have integrity. Without integrity, you crash.”
He also addressed the rising influence of foreign investors in Ghana’s logistics sector, particularly in air and sea transport, and advocated for increased local ownership of these essential infrastructures.
He shared his ambitious vision for reshaping Africa’s logistics sector and highlighted McDan Group’s pivotal role in logistics during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it facilitated the distribution of essential medicines and food across Ghana.
He also announced the company’s partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA) to build Ghana’s first privately owned port, aiming to solve Africa’s logistical challenges with local solutions.

Additionally, Dr. McKorley outlined McDan Group’s strategic partnerships, including collaborations with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and a billion-dollar agreement with Kenya to expand the company’s operations.
He celebrated the launch of his first ship to Vietnam, signaling the revival of the historic Black Star Line, and revealed plans to operate over 100 vessels across Africa to transform the continent’s maritime logistics.
The event also featured a panel discussion, with industry experts like Professor Kofi Abochi providing insights on the importance of African-led initiatives in logistics and transport.
