Premium healthcare should be a right for all Ghanaians – Equity Health CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of Equity Health Insurance, Dr Elton Fredrick Afari, has stated that premium quality healthcare should not be a privilege for a few but a right for all Ghanaians.

He made the remark at Madina Market during the launch of the company’s latest initiative, the NHIS Top-Up, aimed at expanding access to enhanced healthcare services.

“We believe everyone, regardless of their income level, deserves access to fast, reliable, and quality healthcare,” Dr Afari said. “The NHIS Top-Up is our way of bridging the gap between basic insurance coverage and the premium healthcare people truly need.”

The NHIS Top-Up, rolled out from 8 to 11 April 2025, allows subscribers to supplement their current National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) plans with additional benefits such as reduced waiting times, affordable premiums, and access to a wider range of services not covered under the standard NHIS.

The activation at Madina Market saw Equity Health representatives assisting people to register on the spot, upgrade their packages, and learn more about the advantages of the Top-Up plan. The goal is to ensure a seamless onboarding experience and educate the public on how the initiative can improve their healthcare journey.

Many market-goers responded positively to the initiative.

“I’ve been using NHIS for years, but the delays can be frustrating,” said Afia Ntiamoah, a trader. “With this Top-Up, I feel like I finally have real options for quicker care.”

Kwabena Asiedu, another customer, added, “The staff were welcoming and explained everything clearly. I signed up in minutes and now feel more secure about my health.”

The NHIS Top-Up aligns with Equity Health Insurance’s mission to deliver value-for-money healthcare solutions through a network of accredited hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies across Ghana. The company has also been at the forefront of integrating digital innovations such as telemedicine and AI to enhance customer experience and efficiency.

Dr Afari noted that the initiative will soon be extended to other markets and communities across the country as part of Equity Health’s ongoing commitment to health equity.
