We need adequate measures to prevent fires

The loss of the Central Medical Stores of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in Tema to fire last Tuesday has exposed the lack of preparedness on the part of the country to face such disasters.

Apart from the occasional terse announcement warning the public to desist from lighting fires at this time of the year, it seems not much has been done by way of preventing fires at very sensitive installations and public places.

As a result, news on fire outbreaks has almost become a daily ritual since the beginning of the year, a situation which poses serious questions on the security of the country, its assets and inhabitants.

Against the backdrop of the severe harmattan being experienced at this time of the year, the security agencies need to be put on alert to help avert any further destruction of lives and property by fire.

The fire in Tema last Tuesday exposed the kind of attitude we have adopted as a people in catering for national assets.
