The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has issued a statement regarding a disturbing video circulating on social media, in which visiting Black Americans allege they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals claiming to be police officers.

According to the statement, the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have launched investigations into the matter, and the public will be updated upon completion of their work.

The GTA assures visitors and the general public that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination, with reinforced security systems in place to guarantee safety and comfort throughout the festive season.

“As Ghana welcomes thousands of visitors for this year’s December in GH, GTA assures all travellers and the general public that the country remains a safe and trusted destination. Our security systems—supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners—have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations. Visitors who require assistance or wish to make enquiries may contact GTA on 0579579019, 030 700 7100, or reach us via WhatsApp on 0546352240.

“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” a part of the statement reads.

In the said viral video, a supposed American visited narrated an ordeal of being kidnaped by three masked police officers.

“They covered their licence plates and didn’t have name badges. As soon as they decided to take us, they took our phones so that we can’t record or contact anyone.
