I was devastated when I was accused of having a hand in Suzzy Williams death - Nana Ama McBrown

Ghanaian actress and TV host Nana Ama McBrown has opened up about painful accusations linking her to the tragic death of fellow actress Suzzy Williams.

In a candid revelation on her show, Onua Showtime on Friday, January 24, McBrown addressed these rumours, which she says hurt her deeply.

Suzzy Williams, a talented young actress, died in a car crash on September 8, 2005, at the age of 23. Her death shocked the entire country considering her soaring fame at the time. After the accident, rumours spread that Nana Ama McBrown had a hand in her death, with claims that she was envious of the deceased's progress in the industry and the competition she gave her  at the time.

Speaking about the issue, McBrown said, “I was shocked and heartbroken. Why would I do such an abominable thing? Suzzy was like a sister to me. We worked together frequently, and there was no competition or jealousy between us.”

She also  recalled how she first heard the news of Suzzy’s death.

“I had just returned to Ghana from a trip to Italy with the late gospel singer Seth Frimpong. While in a minibus heading home, I heard in the car that Suzzy had passed away.

“I immediately called our senior colleague, Kofi Adjorlolo, who confirmed the news. He told me he was at the mortuary where Suzzy’s body had been sent”, she added.

She stressed that she had no connection to the tragic event. She said the accusations caused her deep pain because she and Suzzy were close.

“I was devastated when I was accused of having a hand in Suzzy Williams’ death,” she said, calling the allegations baseless and hurtful.

Suzzy Williams was a rising star in Ghana’s movie industry. She was known for films like Bloody Mary, The Comforter, and Together Forever. She was a talented actress and singer, leaving a lasting impact despite her short career.

Her accident happened on the La-Nungua highway in Accra. Suzzy was in the car with her boyfriend during the early hours of the morning. After her death, many people called for road safety measures, and the Suzzy Williams Memorial Fund was set up to help road accident victims.

In 2019, Suzzy’s mother, Cecilia Williams, raised questions about her daughter’s death. She said Suzzy was still alive when she arrived at the hospital, though earlier reports claimed she died at the scene. Cecilia also mentioned suspicious behaviour from medical staff, making her doubt the official story of her death.
