NYU Accra ready to start "Labone Dialogues"

The New York University (NYU) Accra will take off with its monthly community engagement events dubbed: "Labone Dialogues" on Friday, February 14. at its campus on Fourth Norla Street at  Labone.

The topic for the first edition is ‘Archives and Local Production of Knowledge: The Kofi Ghanaba Archives.’

A statement from NYU Accra, signed by Benardine Holdbrook Ghanson, Assistant Internship and Community Engagement Coordinator, said the programme aims to educate and inform NYU students about important personalities in Ghana, who have contributed in diverse ways to the growth and development of academia, Ghana and the world in general.

“We believe this engagement will offer our students the opportunity to interact more with the Ghanaian community and most importantly, for them to obtain invaluable information about the country,” the statement added.

The programme will be presented by Prof. Awam Amkpa in collaboration with Professor John Collins and Professor Kofi Anyidoho.

Ghanaba was initially known as Guy Warren of Ghana. He was born in Accra in 1923 and was a world-famous drummer and Afro-Jazz advocate. He died in 2009 and left behind a massive collection of items including books, records, letters and newspapers.
 
According to Prof. Chike Frankie Edozien, Director of NYU Accra, the university will donate a copy of the archives to the University of Ghana so scholars may also access them there as well as at NYU.
