Photography is more than capturing moments -Sawer John Amonor

Ghanaian photographer, Sawer John Amonor, has shared his insightful perspective on the art of photography, noting that it encompasses more than just capturing fleeting moments.

According to Amonor, photography is a powerful medium that can evoke emotions, tell stories, and preserve memories.

"Photography is more than capturing moments; it’s about telling stories that connect people to their emotions and heritage. Every click of the camera is an opportunity to preserve history,” says Sawer John Amonor, a Ghanaian police officer turned award-winning photographer,” he said.

A Police officer, Amonor has gradually honed his creative skills in photography, having worked with high profile personality.

The latest work that has earned him recognition is his coverage of the inauguration of Presdient Mahama’s inauguration on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

"Photography is not just about pointing a camera and clicking a button," It's about capturing the essence of a moment, conveying a message, and leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

“Documenting such a historic event was a privilege. My goal was not just to capture the ceremony but to tell a story about Ghana’s pride, resilience, and culture," Amonor reflected.

Amonor’s dual role as a police officer and photographer offers him a unique lens through which he views the world.

"Being a police officer has taught me discipline and a keen eye for detail, which I bring into my photography. Both roles allow me to serve my community, though in different ways,” he shared.

Recognition

Amonor’s dedication to his craft was rewarded when he received the Best New Photographer award at the 2023 Eminent Awards. This milestone is a testament to his talent and perseverance.

"Winning this award is humbling and serves as a reminder of how far passion and hard work can take you. It inspires me to keep pushing boundaries," he said.

Beyond awards, Amonor’s influence extends to mentoring young creatives. At the 2024 Young Professionals Conference organized by the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), he delivered a keynote address titled “Unleashing Potential: Empowering Through Leadership.”

In recognition of his contributions, GUPS honoured Amonor with a citation celebrating his dual commitment to law enforcement and the arts. His journey exemplifies the possibility of balancing multiple passions while making a significant impact in both.

"Leadership is about empowering others to realize their potential. If my story inspires someone to pursue their dreams, I feel fulfilled,” Amonor added.
