Soho set for high-energy Legends Night tribute to James Brown

Music lovers are in for a thrilling experience this weekend as Soho at Marina Mall, Eko City, hosts another edition of its popular “Legends Night”, with a special tribute to James Brown.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, forms part of activities to mark the Eid long weekend and promises a night filled with nostalgia, high-energy performances and timeless music.

Celebration

In an interview with The Mirror, the Head of Business Development, Madam Jessica Zwennes, said the night would celebrate the legacy of one of music’s greatest icons.

“Saturday’s feature is Legends Night, and with it, we honour the ‘M’ in Motown Classics. At this particular event, we are honouring James Brown,” she said.

She added that the event would be hosted by popular media personality, Lexus Bill, making the experience even more engaging for patrons.

“It promises to be a very exciting night, full of funk, soul, high-energy performances and a blend of music and live entertainment,” Madam Zwennes noted.

Free entry with reservations

She says the event is open to the public with no cover charge, although guests are encouraged to reserve tables in advance due to high demand.

“It is a ticketed event but there is no cover charge, so it is essentially free entry. However, we recommend that people reserve tables because they tend to be booked out very fast,” she explained.

She further indicated that table reservations come with a minimum spend requirement, adding that interested patrons could contact the organisers directly to secure their spots.

Lessons from a legend

Highlighting the inspiration behind the tribute, Madam Zwennes described James Brown as a symbol of positivity and empowerment.

“You know his famous song, I Feel Good. It’s all about feeling good, living in the moment and celebrating each year as it comes. That was the essence of James Brown,” she said.

She added that beyond music, the legendary performer stood for social empowerment and self-belief.

“He was the Godfather of Soul and all about uplifting people. When you feel good within yourself, it translates into positive energy around you,” she stated.

Bridging generations through music

Madam Zwennes explained that the concept behind Legends Night was to educate and connect younger audiences to the roots of contemporary music.

“A lot of young people don’t have much information about those who came before us. Today’s music, especially Afrobeats, is heavily influenced by these legends, but many don’t even realise it,” she said.

She noted that many modern songs are sampled from older classics, making such events important in bridging the gap between generations.

“There’s nothing new under the sun. The Legends Night allows us to explore the new in the context of the old, bringing together both the older and younger generations through music,” she added.
